Visão magazine has named Quinta de Monforte Vinhão 2021 one of this year’s 65 best Portuguese wines. “Quite a surprise,” remarks Visão Se7e’s food and wine critic Manuel Gonçalves da Silva, if you expect reds from the Vinho Verde region to be “inferior, rustic and harsh.”
Among the 65 best wines he sampled this year, the renowned expert describes Quinta de Monforte’s Vinhão red as “aromatic, smooth, and elegant,” with “a full-bodied yet soft palate,” “stimulating freshness” and “pleasant red berry notes set against a mineral undertone.” “A great wine overall,” and “very gastronomic,” he concludes.

The “remarkable quality” of Vinhos Verdes is gaining global recognition, not just “Alvarinho or Loureiro whites,” but also other equally appealing red grapes. Quinta de Monforte’s Vinhão rosé is a case in point:
“A superb rosé by any standard, enhanced by the fresh, intense fruitiness of Vinhão, providing a new outlook on Vinhos Verdes.”

“The hillside of Quinta de Monforte is much more than a picture postcard. Ten years after the vineyard was planted, Daniel Rocha continues to build upon a project that’s here to stay. And the Vinhão, now in its third edition,
exemplifies this evolution. Winemaker Francisco Gonçalves’ creation offers surprising elegance, along with great freshness and minerality. Full marks.”

Quinta de Monforte’s Vinhão red is “a fine example of the profiles that Vinhão wines have attained in recent years.” Highlighting this typical grape from the Vinhos Verdes region, acclaimed wine journalist João Paulo Martins celebrates this new Vinhão winemaking.
Citing Quinta do Monforte’s Vinhão as an example, he comments, “Fortunately, the Vinhão variety has joined the ranks of fine grapes that make our country proud; this wasn’t always the case.”
The noted expert adds that “the Vinhão reds [...] possess a unique profile, with an intense colour, strong vegetal aromas, and black fruits, […] pairing exceedingly well with much of our cuisine.”
João Paulo Martins concludes that Quinta de Monforte “produces quality whites and rosés in Penafiel, an area where they’re in short supply.”

Boasting granite soils with outstanding porosity and sun exposure, this Penafiel estate has “particularly favourable conditions” for this variety to flourish.
The journalist points out that Azal has been “squandered on traditionally subpar, rustic wines,” but it is now being “adequately crafted, yielding distinguished, elegant and complex wines.”

“This is one of the country’s most divisive grape varieties, but when it hits its peak, the result is pure joy, even for critics of red Vinhos Verdes. A colossal, yet extremely elegant wine. A master-stroke by winemaker Francisco Gonçalves.

“Located in the heart of the Vale do Sousa, the Penafiel producer continues to excel with the introduction of increasingly ambitious and daring new wines; these include two varietals, Azal and Padeiro de Basto, fermented in barrels.”

“With its entry-level range, Quinta de Monforte perfectly captures the exuberant essence of Vinho Verde. Single-varietal wines from the estate’s main grapes emphasise their unique qualities.
Loureiro is drier, full-bodied and citrusy, with subtle vegetal notes;
Alvarinho is lighter, sweeter, fresh and fruity, ready to drink now and at any time;
The rosé, from the first press of an early-harvest Vinhão, demonstrates this on the palate, revealing green fruits with hints of vegetal notes, some minerality, and, of course, outstanding freshness.”

"Born in Chaves, Daniel Rocha soon returned to the family's birthplace, where he ended up buying the granite hill fort he could see from his bedroom, on the outskirts of Penafiel. Once the family was settled in the manor house, here he produces vinho verde and is going to build a tourism unit with 30 rooms."

"The originality of the place defines the wines Coming from vineyards on terraces of granite walls, the new wines of Quinta de Monforte are versatile, light and smooth and yet complex and structured. The modernity of Vinhos Verdes also passes through Penafiel."
